Supported by private donations, raffles, and calendar sales,
Send Them To
Greenland
is proud to announce the first two monetary awards of its history.
The first, in the amount of $1,000 dollars, is being awarded to Alison Sigethy,
a Maryland kayaker who intends to compete in the 2006 Greenland National
Kayaking Championships, to be held in Sisimiut, West Greenland, in July 2006.
For more information on Alison, please visit her website at:
www.goingtogreenland.com wherein
she describes her motivations and plans. A longtime kayaker, she has recently
caught the ‘skinny stick’ bug, and we are looking forward to her sharing her
cultural and competitive experiences with North American kayakers, upon her
return.
The second grant, for $750 dollars, is being awarded to Vernon Doucette, editor
of the Qajaq Journal, for the specific purpose of conducting an in-depth
interview with the renowned qajaq scholar, H. C Peterson. This interview is
slated to appear, in English, in a future volume of the Qajaq Journal, published
biannually by Qajaq USA, an affiliated chapter of Qaannat Kattuffiatt.
Those of you who have donated to, or are interested in the goals of this fund
may have recently noticed that STTG has modified and expanded the goals of its
mission statement to include projects such as the Peterson interview. We believe
that projects such as these can and should be a part of the
Send Them To
Greenland
Mission,
which now states:
Send Them To
Greenland
is a fundraising organization that seeks to support and enhance the relationship
between Greenlanders & those North Americans interested in Greenlandic kayaking
techniques. Candidates for Send Them To Greenland grant awards must demonstrate
respect for the culture and the hospitality of the Greenlandic people.
We would like to thank all of the folks who, over the last 18 months, have made
donations and calendar purchases, small and large. Without your support, these
two individuals would go wanting, and we believe that the North American G-Style
community would be poorer for it.
Sincerely,
Cheri Perry
